The city is located in a long sweeping bend of the Tagus with a very high position. With a large, fast running river around three sides, it is clearly a natural place to defend. The city has been a fort since Roman times, was occupied by Muslims for centuries, but more recently became well known for the peaceful co-existence of Jewish Christian and Muslim communities. The bishops of Toledo have a long history of having strong influence in Spain’s Catholic Church.
